PDF work splits into three jobs: changing which pages a document contains, changing how much space it takes, and turning pages into images. Each of those is a different operation with different limits, and knowing which limit applies saves a lot of wasted effort.
The one that surprises people most is compression. A PDF made of text and vector content has a lot of structural overhead that can be packed down safely. A PDF made of scanned pages is almost entirely image data, and the only way to shrink it meaningfully is to reduce the resolution of those images, which visibly degrades them. Lossless compression cannot promise a target size, and any tool that promises one for a scan is quietly lowering quality.
Everything here runs in your browser, which matters more for PDFs than for most formats. Contracts, invoices, medical records, and application documents are exactly the files people are asked to upload to unknown servers. These tools never transmit them.

Common questions about PDF tools
Why did compressing my PDF barely change the size?
Because it is mostly images, most likely a scan. The compression here is lossless and works on document structure, not on image data. Shrinking a scan substantially requires lowering image resolution, which visibly reduces quality.
Can I compress a PDF to an exact size like 500 KB?
Not with a lossless tool, and you should be sceptical of any tool that promises it for a scanned document. Hitting a fixed target means degrading the images until the number is reached.
How do I split a PDF into several separate files?
Run the split once per part, naming a different page range each time. There is no single action that explodes a document into one file per page.
Should I convert PDF pages to JPG or PNG?
JPG for pages that are mostly photographs, since the files are far smaller. PNG for diagrams, screenshots, and text, where the lossless output keeps lines and letters sharp.
Will the text still be searchable after converting to an image?
No. Converting a page to JPG or PNG turns everything into pixels, so the text can no longer be selected, searched, or copied. Keep the original PDF if you need that.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
