Almost every image task is one of three things: change the pixel dimensions, change the file format, or make the file smaller. Those pull in different directions, which is why they are separate tools rather than one button. Resizing throws away pixels, converting changes how the pixels are stored, and compressing decides how much detail to discard.
The single most useful thing to know is that width matters more than quality. A photo straight from a phone can be 4000 pixels wide while the page showing it is 1200. Those extra pixels are invisible on screen but they are most of the file size, so reducing the width almost always saves more than dragging a quality slider down.
Format choice is a trade-off, not a ranking. JPG is the most compatible and the smallest for photographs, but it cannot store transparency. PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparency, which is why it barely compresses. WebP usually beats both on size, and every current browser supports it. Common questions about image tools
Should I resize or compress to make a file smaller?
Resize first. Reducing the width to what the page or upload actually needs usually removes more file size than any quality setting, and it costs nothing visible. Compress afterwards if the file is still too heavy.
Which format should I choose for a website?
WebP for most images, since it is the smallest at equal quality and every current browser supports it. JPG when you need the widest possible compatibility. PNG only when you need transparency or perfectly preserved pixels, because it barely compresses photographs.
Why did converting to JPG turn my transparent background white?
JPG has no way to store transparency, so transparent areas have to become a solid colour and white is the standard choice. If you need the transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
Does converting between formats improve quality?
No. Converting can only preserve or discard information, never restore it. A JPG that has already lost detail will not regain it by being saved as PNG, though the PNG will stop it losing any more.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Every image tool here runs inside your browser, so files stay on your device. That matters for photos of documents, ID cards, or anything you would not want sitting on someone else's server.
