Alphabetize Any List, A to Z or Z to A
Paste your list with one item per line and it is sorted into alphabetical order instantly. You can sort ascending or descending and strip duplicate entries in the same step. Whether you call it an alphabetizer, an alphabetical sorter, an ABC order generator or simply putting a list in alphabetical order, this does the same job. Free, no sign-up, and everything runs in your browser.
How to use this tool
- 1
Paste Your List
Put each entry on its own line. Names, words, tasks, references, or product titles all work the same way.
- 2
Choose the Direction
Pick A to Z for ascending order, or Z to A to reverse the alphabetical order.
- 3
Remove Duplicates If Needed
Turn the option on to keep only one copy of each entry. The count before and after is shown so you can see how many were dropped.
- 4
Check the Result
The sorted list appears immediately, with no sort button to press. Editing the input updates the output as you go.
- 5
Copy or Download
Send the list to your clipboard, or save it as a text file.
What it can do
Instant Alphabetizer
The sorted output appears without a button press and recalculates whenever the input or options change.
A to Z and Z to A
Ascending and descending alphabetical order, switchable with one click.
Case Is Ignored
Sorting does not separate uppercase from lowercase, so Apple and apple sit next to each other instead of in two distant blocks.
Accented Letters Sort Correctly
Letters such as é, ä and ç are ordered as e, a and c, so they land where you expect rather than after z, which is what a raw character-code sort would do.
Duplicate Removal
Identical lines can be stripped out during the sort, in a single pass.
Automatic Cleanup
Blank lines are dropped and stray spaces at the start and end of each line are trimmed.
Before and After Counts
You see how many entries went in and how many came out, which makes duplicate removal verifiable rather than a guess.
Free and Local
No account and no upload. The list is processed in your browser and never transmitted.

Limits to know
- Sorting works line by line. Words inside a single line are not reordered, and a comma-separated list on one line is not split apart.
- The sort is alphabetical, not numeric. Among mixed entries, 10 comes before 2 because characters are compared rather than numeric value.
- There is no sort by length, frequency, or date.
- Case-sensitive sorting cannot be forced on.
- Leading articles are not ignored, so "The Contract" files under T rather than C.
- For a bibliography, sorting uses the start of each line. If the surname is not first, the result will not match citation rules.
- Very long lists are bounded by browser memory, because the work happens on your device.

Frequently asked questions
How do I alphabetize a list online?
Paste the list with one item per line. The sorted result appears beside it straight away, and you can then copy it or download it as a text file. No account is needed.
What is an alphabetizer?
It is simply a tool that puts a list into alphabetical order. Alphabetizer, alphabetical sorter, ABC order generator, alphabetical order maker and list sorter all describe the same thing, and this page does that job.
Can I sort from Z to A?
Yes. Switch to Z to A and the list is returned in reverse alphabetical order.
How are accented letters handled?
They are sorted as their unaccented equivalents, so é sorts as e and ñ as n. That matches what most people expect. A raw character-code sort would instead push accented letters after z.
Is the sort case sensitive?
No. Capitalisation is ignored, so the same word written differently stays grouped together. Case-sensitive sorting is not available as an option.
How do I remove duplicates while sorting?
Turn on the duplicate removal option. Only one copy of each identical entry is kept, and the before and after counts show you how many lines were removed.
Can I alphabetize a comma-separated list?
Not directly, because sorting is line based. Put each entry on its own line first and it will sort as expected.
How do I put a bibliography in alphabetical order?
Place each source on its own line and make sure the author surname comes first, since the start of the line is the sort key. If the line begins with a title or a number, that is what the order will follow.
Are numbers sorted correctly?
Numbers are treated as text rather than by value, so item 10 comes before item 2. For numeric order, pad with leading zeros, for example 02 instead of 2.
Are blank lines kept?
No. Empty lines are removed and extra spaces at the start and end of each line are trimmed.
Is there a limit on list length?
No fixed limit. Because everything runs in the browser, your device memory is the practical ceiling. Ordinary name and index lists are no problem.
Is my list sent to a server?
No. Sorting happens entirely in your browser, so the list never leaves your device. That makes it safe for client names, staff lists, or any internal data.
Can I save the sorted list?
Yes. Copy it to the clipboard, or download it as a text file.
Is it free to use?
Yes, completely free with no sign-up, no email required, and no daily limit.
